Paper Label Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, paper label production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Paper Label Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, shipments abroad of labels of paper or paperboard increased by 34% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper label exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 18%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico was the major exporter of labels of paper or paperboard in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 35% of total exports in 2021. El Salvador (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Costa Rica (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) and Brazil (X tons). All these countries together took near 53% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to paper label exports from Mexico stood at -16.0%. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+35.3%), Brazil (+4.6%), Trinidad and Tobago (+3.5%) and El Salvador (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +35.3% from 2012-2021. Guatemala experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Costa Rica (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. El Salvador (+11 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+6.5 p.p.), Costa Rica (+5.2 p.p.), Guatemala (+4.5 p.p.), Brazil (+3.9 p.p.) and Trinidad and Tobago (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -36.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest paper label supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by El Salvador ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by the Dominican Republic, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico totaled +3.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: El Salvador (+1.6% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+34.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, waning by -12.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 58% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+23.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Paper Label Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fifth year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in supplies from abroad of labels of paper or paperboard, which increased by 33% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports showed a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, paper label imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mexico (X tons) represented roughly 97% of total imports in 2021.

Mexico was also the fastest-growing in terms of the labels of paper or paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +23.9% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Mexico (+11 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
