Laser Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the Latin American laser market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. The total consumption indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the third year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in overseas shipments of lasers, other than laser diodes, which increased by 229% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X units) represented the key exporter of lasers, other than laser diodes in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 99% of total export.

Mexico was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lasers, other than laser diodes exports, with a CAGR of +42.1% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of Mexico (+39 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) also remains the largest laser supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -19.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Mexico.

Laser Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of lasers, other than laser diodes was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, laser imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Mexico prevails in imports structure, amounting to X units, which was approx. 55% of total imports in 2021. El Salvador (X units) held a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (6.3%), Brazil (5.7%), Argentina (5.5%), Guatemala (5.1%) and Costa Rica (5%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to laser imports into Mexico stood at -4.1%. At the same time, Guatemala (+17.0%), El Salvador (+7.8%), Argentina (+6.7%) and Costa Rica (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +17.0% from 2012-2021. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Guatemala, El Salvador, Argentina, Costa Rica and Colombia increased by +4.1, +4.1, +3.1, +2.5 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lasers, other than laser diodes in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 23% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 4.4% share.

In Mexico, laser imports increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+1.8% per year) and Argentina (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, laser import price increased by +62.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while El Salvador ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
