Leek Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American leek market decreased by -1.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. The total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -9.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Leek Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, leek production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Peru (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons), with a combined 88% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +5.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average leek yield reduced to X tons per ha in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 17%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, leveling off in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Latin America and the Caribbean declined modestly to X ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to leek production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, shipments abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, exports showed tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 119%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, leek exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +79.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 35%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) was the main exporter of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables, constituting 71% of total exports. The Dominican Republic (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Guatemala (12%).

Exports from Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+14.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +14.6% from 2012-2022. Guatemala experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. The Dominican Republic (+9.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico and Guatemala saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -4.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 14% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico stood at +7.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Dominican Republic (+7.9% per year) and Guatemala (-10.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 9.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, leek export price decreased by -38.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Guatemala ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Leek Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After three years of decline, supplies from abroad of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables increased by 16% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports saw a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leek imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -32.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Haiti represented the main importer of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 43% of total imports in 2022. Jamaica (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Bahamas (X tons), Honduras (X tons) and Aruba (X tons). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. The following importers - El Salvador (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Antigua and Barbuda (X tons), Grenada (X tons) and Barbados (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Imports into Haiti increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guatemala (+42.9%), Honduras (+25.7%), Grenada (+11.9%), Jamaica (+9.1%), Bahamas (+4.2%) and Antigua and Barbuda (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Aruba (-2.1%), Barbados (-4.3%), the Dominican Republic (-7.5%), Mexico (-7.7%) and El Salvador (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Haiti (+15 p.p.), Honduras (+6.2 p.p.), Jamaica (+6 p.p.), Guatemala (+3.1 p.p.), Grenada (+1.9 p.p.) and Bahamas (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Aruba, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and El Salvador saw its share reduced by -2.8%, -4.3%, -4.9% and -7.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Haiti ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bahamas ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Aruba, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Haiti amounted to +1.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bahamas (+4.4% per year) and Aruba (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 20%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Aruba ($X per ton), while El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
