Lemon And Lime Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fourth year in a row, the Latin American lemon and lime market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.4% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -11.1% against 2018 indices. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Lemon And Lime Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, lemon and lime production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by +0.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Mexico (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons), together comprising 80% of total production. Colombia, Peru, Chile and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +12.6%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of lemons and limes in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at X tons per ha, almost unchanged from 2021 figures. In general, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 6.5%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lemons and limes production in Latin America and the Caribbean declined to X ha, which is down by -3.4% compared with the previous year's figure. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 8.7%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to lemon and lime production reached the maximum at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, approx. X tons of lemons and limes were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; declining by -8.7% compared with the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports amounted to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +26.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Mexico was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 56% of total exports. Argentina (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Brazil (12%). Chile (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Peru (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lemon and lime exports from Mexico stood at +1.2%. At the same time, Colombia (+28.7%), Peru (+18.8%), Brazil (+7.9%) and Chile (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012-2022. Argentina experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Brazil (+5.4 p.p.) and Colombia (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mexico (-3.6 p.p.) and Argentina (-5.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest lemon and lime supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico amounted to +11.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Argentina (-2.6% per year) and Brazil (+9.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 29%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Lemon And Lime Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Lemon and lime imports reached X tons in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 39%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Chile was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 31% of total imports. Mexico (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Paraguay (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Panama (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Bahamas (X tons) and Argentina (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lemon and lime imports into Chile stood at +11.3%. At the same time, Panama (+307.6%), El Salvador (+77.6%), Argentina (+19.7%), Mexico (+16.1%), Paraguay (+14.4%) and Bahamas (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Panama emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +307.6% from 2012-2022. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mexico, El Salvador, Panama, Chile, Paraguay and Argentina increased by +6.4, +5.9, +5.7, +4.1, +2.9 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Chile ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lemons and limes in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Bahamas, with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile stood at +10.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mexico (+16.4% per year) and Bahamas (+10.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, waning by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
