Linseed Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Latin American linseed market, when its value decreased by -11.1% to $X. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a slight descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Linseed Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, linseed production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 307% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of linseed production was Argentina (X tons), comprising approx. 55% of total volume. Moreover, linseed production in Argentina exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Uruguay (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Brazil (X tons), with a 16% share.

In Argentina, linseed production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Uruguay (-1.2% per year) and Brazil (-4.7% per year).

The average linseed yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 6.8% compared with the previous year. Overall, the yield continues to indicate mild growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 20%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The linseed harvested area rose sharply to X ha in 2022, with an increase of 8% against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to linseed production attained the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Linseed Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, shipments abroad of linseed increased by 68% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 90%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, linseed exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 68% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Argentina dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bolivia (X tons), constituting a 9.6% share of total exports. Uruguay (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Argentina decreased at an average annual rate of -6.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mexico (+41.5%), Bolivia (+8.7%) and Uruguay (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +41.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Bolivia (+7.1 p.p.), Uruguay (+3 p.p.) and Mexico (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-12.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Argentina ($X) remains the largest linseed supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bolivia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Argentina amounted to -8.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bolivia (+10.2% per year) and Uruguay (+10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -13.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bolivia ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uruguay (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Linseed Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of linseed, when their volume decreased by -20.6% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 41%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, linseed imports contracted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +91.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), achieving a 6% share of total imports. Costa Rica (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
