Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers exported in Latin America and the Caribbean rose significantly to X units, picking up by 5.4% against the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 162%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filling containers machinery exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 57%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which accounted for 37% of total exports. Guatemala (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Costa Rica (11%), Ecuador (10%), Brazil (7.5%), El Salvador (6.3%) and Nicaragua (5.8%).

Exports from Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +25.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nicaragua (+36.3%), Ecuador (+2.3%), Costa Rica (+1.8%) and Brazil (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nicaragua emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +36.3% from 2012-2021. Guatemala experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, El Salvador (-3.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+32 p.p.), Nicaragua (+5.5 p.p.), Ecuador (+2.2 p.p.) and Costa Rica (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of El Salvador (-1.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and Nicaragua ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 69% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +58.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -11.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per unit), while Guatemala ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nicaragua (+16.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, supplies from abroad of machinery for filling, closing, sealing, capsuling or labelling containers was finally on the rise to reach X units after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, filling containers machinery imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 23%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, the largest filling containers machinery importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Chile ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports. Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Uruguay and Belize lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Belize, with a CAGR of +72.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, waning by -22.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per unit), while Belize ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
