In 2021, shipments abroad of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard decreased by -28.6% to X units, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 98%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, finishing paper machinery exports contracted notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 66%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Brazil dominates exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 94% of total exports in 2021. Colombia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -5.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Colombia (+34.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +34.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Brazil (+11 p.p.) and Colombia (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest finishing paper machinery supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.

In Brazil, finishing paper machinery exports plunged by an average annual rate of -5.9% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, waning by -5.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 137% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, purchases abroad of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard increased by 122% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, finishing paper machinery imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil dominates imports structure, recording X units, which was near 54% of total imports in 2021. Peru (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 6.3% share, followed by Chile (6.1%), Argentina (6.1%), Colombia (5.2%) and Ecuador (4.9%). Cuba (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of machinery for finishing paper or paperboard. At the same time, Peru (+40.3%), Cuba (+27.4%), Ecuador (+15.1%) and Argentina (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +40.3% from 2012-2021. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Colombia (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru, Cuba, Ecuador and Brazil increased by +6, +3.9, +3.5 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for finishing paper or paperboard in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Peru ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with a 9.3% share.

In Brazil, finishing paper machinery imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+42.6% per year) and Colombia (-1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per unit), while Chile ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cuba (+19.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
