After three years of growth, overseas shipments of machinery for making paper or paperboard decreased by -88.1% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,091% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper machinery exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 6,063%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Paper machinery imports fell sharply to X units in 2021, waning by -36% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 214% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, paper machinery imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 257%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X units) represented the main importer of machinery for making paper or paperboard, constituting 49% of total imports. Bolivia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 27% share, followed by Venezuela (7.9%) and Colombia (5.5%). Argentina (X units), Chile (X units) and Peru (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bolivia (with a CAGR of +30.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for making paper or paperboard in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Venezuela ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Bolivia, with a 4.6% share.

In Mexico, paper machinery imports expanded at an average annual rate of +9.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Venezuela (+28.4% per year) and Bolivia (+18.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 33%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per unit), while Bolivia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
