Magnesium Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the Latin American magnesium market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, approx. X tons of magnesium were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; jumping by 258% against the previous year. Overall, exports continue to indicate mild growth. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, magnesium exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Brazil dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), achieving a 7.2% share of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the magnesium exports, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mexico (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Brazil (+3.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest magnesium supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil stood at -2.2%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 25% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Brazil stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+19.1%).

Magnesium Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of magnesium, when their volume increased by 25% to X tons. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, magnesium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild decline. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mexico (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 87% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), constituting an 8.4% share of total imports. Paraguay (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Paraguay (with a CAGR of +182.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest magnesium importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 94% share of total imports. Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 1.7%.

Paraguay, with a CAGR of +131.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Brazil ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) and Argentina ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
