Over the period under review, exports posted a strong expansion. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a prominent expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Chile was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), creating a 13% share of total exports. Mexico (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates exports from Chile stood at +7.0%. At the same time, Mexico (+45.8%) and Brazil (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +45.8% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mexico (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of manganites, manganates and permanganates, molybdates and tungstates was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Mexico (X tons), together achieving a 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Paraguay (X tons) and Chile (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.

Imports into Brazil decreased at an average annual rate of -3.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+17.3%), Paraguay (+11.3%), Colombia (+9.6%) and Argentina (+7.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +17.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Chile (-7.8%) and Mexico (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru, Colombia, Argentina and Paraguay increased by +8, +6.4, +4.2 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported manganites, manganates and permanganates, molybdates and tungstates in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Colombia, with an 11% share.

In Brazil, manganites, manganates, molybdates and tungstates imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+12.1% per year) and Colombia (+4.6% per year).

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Paraguay ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
