Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, shipments abroad of marble and travertine was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 173%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, marble and travertine exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 126% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) represented the main exporter of marble and travertine, creating 73% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), making up a 17% share of total exports. Guatemala (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine exports from Brazil stood at +20.6%. At the same time, Chile (+34.0%), Nicaragua (+23.8%) and Guatemala (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +34.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mexico (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil, Nicaragua and Chile increased by +61, +2.8 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 1% share.

In Brazil, marble and travertine exports increased at an average annual rate of +26.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (-10.2% per year) and Guatemala (+19.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, marble and travertine export price increased by +47.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Nicaragua ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, after seven years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of marble and travertine, when their volume increased by 33% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep slump. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Brazil was the main importer of marble and travertine in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2021. Colombia (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mexico (7.4%), Venezuela (7.2%), Cayman Islands (5.7%) and El Salvador (4.6%).

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of marble and travertine. At the same time, Cayman Islands (+36.5%) and El Salvador (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cayman Islands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Colombia (-2.9%), Mexico (-8.8%) and Venezuela (-16.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil, Colombia, Cayman Islands and El Salvador increased by +28, +10, +5.6 and +3.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Cayman Islands, with a 7.9% share.

In Brazil, marble and travertine imports decreased by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Colombia (-2.3% per year) and Cayman Islands (+31.1% per year).

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, marble and travertine import price increased by +59.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 29%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
