For the fifth year in a row, the Latin American MDF market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 9.6% to $X in 2021. Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of MDF exported in Latin America and the Caribbean rose significantly to X cubic meters, surging by 12% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Brazil (X cubic meters) and Chile (X cubic meters) dominates exports structure, together generating 84% of total exports. Argentina (X cubic meters) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5% share, followed by Uruguay (5%). Mexico (X cubic meters) and Ecuador (X cubic meters) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +55.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest MDF supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Chile ($X), Brazil ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 95% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Mexico, Ecuador and Uruguay, which together accounted for a further 4.8%.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +39.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per cubic meter, jumping by 19% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per cubic meter), while Uruguay ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

MDF imports surged to X cubic meters in 2021, with an increase of 57% against 2020. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mexico was the key importing country with an import of about X cubic meters, which finished at 41% of total imports. Chile (X cubic meters) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Colombia (X cubic meters), Peru (X cubic meters), the Dominican Republic (X cubic meters) and Bolivia (X cubic meters). All these countries together took near 38% share of total imports. Ecuador (X cubic meters), Uruguay (X cubic meters), Guatemala (X cubic meters), Paraguay (X cubic meters), Argentina (X cubic meters), Costa Rica (X cubic meters) and Honduras (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to MDF imports into Mexico stood at +2.1%. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+35.0%), Bolivia (+18.0%), Paraguay (+14.3%), Chile (+12.7%), Guatemala (+10.8%), Costa Rica (+6.3%), Honduras (+4.9%), Uruguay (+3.8%), Argentina (+3.6%), Ecuador (+1.9%) and Colombia (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +35.0% from 2012-2021. Peru experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Chile (+6.5 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+4.3 p.p.) and Bolivia (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Colombia and Mexico saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -3.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X), Chile ($X) and Colombia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 66% of total imports. Peru, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, Guatemala, Bolivia, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Honduras lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +30.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
