In 2022, the Latin American market for meat of camels and other animals increased by 0.4% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Argentina (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons), together accounting for 87% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Bolivia (with a CAGR of +1.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average camel and other animal meat yield shrank slightly to X kg per head in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the camel and other animal meat yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for camel and other animal meat production in Latin America and the Caribbean; approximately reflecting 2021. In general, the number of producing animals showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 0.4%. The level of producing animals peaked at X heads in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, producing animals stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of meat of camels and other animals decreased by -16.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after four years of growth. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Dominican Republic was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together committing a 49% share of total exports. Puerto Rico (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

The Dominican Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the meat of camels and other animals exports, with a CAGR of +69.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ecuador (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Peru (-4.7%), Puerto Rico (-8.3%), Chile (-13.7%) and Argentina (-15.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Dominican Republic (+46 p.p.), Ecuador (+8.7 p.p.) and Peru (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Chile (-10.5 p.p.) and Argentina (-13.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest camel and other animal meat supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were the Dominican Republic ($X), Chile ($X) and Argentina ($X), with a combined 62% share of total exports.

The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +49.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 29%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Puerto Rico ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas purchases of meat of camels and other animals decreased by -15.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 184%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, camel and other animal meat imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a measured expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 143%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Imports by Country

Puerto Rico dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2022. Costa Rica (X tons) held a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mexico (6%). Bahamas (X tons), Cayman Islands (X tons), Suriname (X tons), Venezuela (X tons), Jamaica (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to camel and other animal meat imports into Puerto Rico stood at -6.3%. At the same time, Costa Rica (+35.5%), Honduras (+33.4%), Cayman Islands (+20.5%), Jamaica (+18.3%), Suriname (+14.3%), Venezuela (+10.5%), Bahamas (+7.9%) and Mexico (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Costa Rica emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +35.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Costa Rica, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Suriname, Venezuela, Jamaica and Honduras increased by +7.6, +2.8, +2.7, +2.5, +2.2, +2, +1.8 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Puerto Rico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported meat of camels and other animals in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Bahamas, with a 5.4% share.

In Puerto Rico, camel and other animal meat imports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Costa Rica (+50.0% per year) and Bahamas (+18.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, camel and other animal meat import price increased by +39.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
