The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Chile (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Peru (X tons), together comprising 92% of total production. Honduras and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.2%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Honduras (with a CAGR of +1.5%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average melon seed yield soared to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 39% against 2021. In general, the yield, however, saw a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the melon seed yield reached the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of melon seed production in Latin America and the Caribbean shrank to X ha, which is down by -4% compared with 2021 figures. The total harvested area indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of melon seed increased by 134% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 192%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, melon seed exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 178%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons) and Honduras (X tons), together mixing up a 40% share of total exports. Chile (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +97.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Peru ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Honduras, with a 7.1% share.

In Peru, melon seed exports expanded at an average annual rate of +16.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Chile (+2.0% per year) and Honduras (+30.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -57.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Melon Seed Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the amount of melon seed imported in Latin America and the Caribbean declined modestly to X tons, approximately reflecting the year before. Overall, imports saw a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed imports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -28.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 36%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Guatemala represented the major importer of melon seed in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 43% of total imports in 2022. Honduras (X tons) held a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (9.6%) and Brazil (9.2%). The following importers - Bolivia (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons) - each finished at a 6.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bolivia (with a CAGR of +63.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Guatemala ($X), Brazil ($X) and Honduras ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 83% share of total imports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +61.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -25.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 77%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
