Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
For the fourth consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in overseas shipments of metal cutting shears and similar hand tools, which decreased by -17.2% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, metal cutting shear exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 100%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Panama represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 37% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Chile (X tons), together making up a 51% share of total exports. Guatemala (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Panama decreased at an average annual rate of -18.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012-2022. Argentina and Guatemala experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-10.2%), Mexico (-13.6%) and Colombia (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Argentina (+5.3 p.p.), Chile (+5.1 p.p.), Brazil (+5.1 p.p.) and Guatemala (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Panama (-25 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest metal cutting shear supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Panama ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 15% share.
In Mexico, metal cutting shear exports decreased by an average annual rate of -7.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Panama (-12.8% per year) and Chile (+12.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -11.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, metal cutting shear export price decreased by -14.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, the amount of metal cutting shears and similar hand tools imported in Latin America and the Caribbean expanded markedly to X tons, with an increase of 8.8% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, metal cutting shear imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 40%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons), Chile (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) represented roughly 72% of total imports in 2022. Guatemala (X tons), Argentina (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Jamaica (X tons), El Salvador (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Chile ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 56% of total imports. Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras and Jamaica lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
Guatemala, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ecuador (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
