Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of mixes and doughs, when their volume decreased by -7.1% to X tons. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 150% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mixes and doughs exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 109% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) represented the key exporter of mixes and doughs, committing 46% of total exports. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Mexico (12%) and Paraguay (5.4%). The following exporters - Guatemala (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mixes and doughs exports, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+37.7%), Colombia (+16.9%), Guatemala (+11.5%), Mexico (+7.0%) and Uruguay (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Argentina (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+43 p.p.), Paraguay (+5.4 p.p.) and Colombia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Argentina (-49.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and Argentina ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 77% share of total exports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +27.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 22% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fourth consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in overseas purchases of mixes and doughs, which increased by 5.1% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +52.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mixes and doughs imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.4% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Mexico (X tons) and Venezuela (X tons) were the major importers of mixes and doughs in 2022, resulting at near 29% and 24% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Bolivia (X tons), achieving a 12% share of total imports. El Salvador (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Honduras (X tons), Panama (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Panama (with a CAGR of +87.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mixes and doughs in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Venezuela ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico totaled +5.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Venezuela (+31.2% per year) and Guatemala (+8.0% per year).

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
