Molybdenum Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American molybdenum market fell to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X kg in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2019, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molybdenum exports amounted to $X in 2019. In general, exports faced a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,867%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Brazil (X kg), together accounting for 100% of total export.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the molybdenum exports, with a CAGR of -78.9% from 2013 to 2019. Brazil (+99 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2013 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil stood at -80.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2019, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a sharp reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2019, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.

Molybdenum Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After six years of decline, purchases abroad of molybdenum increased by 53% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 80%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, molybdenum imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), achieving a 5% share of total imports. Argentina (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to molybdenum imports into Brazil stood at -3.7%. At the same time, Argentina (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +3.2% from 2012-2022. Mexico experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Argentina (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported molybdenum in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mexico ($X), with a 3.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil stood at -2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mexico (-5.0% per year) and Argentina (+1.9% per year).

Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 57% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
