The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The Dominican Republic (X square meters) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Chile (X square meters). All these countries together took near 12% share of total imports. Argentina (X square meters), Panama (X square meters), Uruguay (X square meters), Costa Rica (X square meters) and Ecuador (X square meters) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +56.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Colombia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 53% share of total imports. These countries were followed by the Dominican Republic, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Panama, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Ecuador, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Among the main importing countries, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +51.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per square meter, dropping by -22.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per square meter), while Brazil ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
