In 2021, overseas shipments of nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 57%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, twine, cordage or textile net exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Peru represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 54% of total exports. Mexico (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Chile (11%) and Brazil (5.2%). The following exporters - Colombia (X tons) and Nicaragua (X tons) - each amounted to a 3.7% share of total exports.

Exports from Peru increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nicaragua (+5.6%), Brazil (+3.5%) and Mexico (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nicaragua emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +5.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Colombia (-4.8%) and Chile (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Peru and Mexico increased by +6.5 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Peru ($X), Mexico ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 89% of total exports. These countries were followed by Chile, Colombia and Nicaragua, which together accounted for a further 8%.

Nicaragua, with a CAGR of +3.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (-0.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of nets of twine, cordage, rope or textile materials imported in Latin America and the Caribbean soared to X tons, picking up by 31% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
