Nickel Ore Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

After three years of growth, the Latin American nickel ore market decreased by -17.9% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption showed a dramatic downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Nickel Ore Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, nickel ore production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 139%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas shipments of nickel ores and concentrates increased by 55% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 278% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nickel ore exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 445% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Guatemala prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), constituting a 4.9% share of total exports.

Guatemala was also the fastest-growing in terms of the nickel ores and concentrates exports, with a CAGR of +33.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Brazil (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Guatemala increased by +22 percentage points.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest nickel ore supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil totaled +7.6%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 62% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 132%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Guatemala totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+0.5%).

Nickel Ore Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, purchases abroad of nickel ores and concentrates was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports posted a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 2,648%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, nickel ore imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 502% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the major importer of nickel ores and concentrates in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), mixing up a 33% share of total imports. Panama (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +88.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nickel ores and concentrates in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 24% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Dominican Republic stood at +99.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+81.3% per year) and Panama (-3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -34.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 12,747% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Panama (+44.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
