Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -24.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ecuador (+31.5%), Peru (+21.6%), Colombia (+7.0%) and Costa Rica (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +31.5% from 2012-2021. El Salvador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-6.2%) and Argentina (-15.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+8.4 p.p.), Peru (+5.4 p.p.), Ecuador (+4 p.p.), Colombia (+3.7 p.p.), Costa Rica (+2.1 p.p.), El Salvador (+1.7 p.p.) and Argentina (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -29.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest non-hydraulic press supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico amounted to -7.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+0.9% per year) and Peru (+56.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 51% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 56%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per unit), while Costa Rica ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+28.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -33.1% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year.
