Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, overseas shipments of nucleic acids and their salts decreased by -66.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 53%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, nucleic acid exports fell notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Mexico (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) represented the major exporters of nucleic acids and their salts in Latin America and the Caribbean, together comprising 68% of total exports. Panama (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Guatemala (5.7%). Argentina (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest nucleic acid supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.3% share.
In Mexico, nucleic acid exports shrank by an average annual rate of -15.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+15.6% per year) and Brazil (-25.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -29.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 115%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Panama ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Nucleic Acid Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, nucleic acid imports in Latin America and the Caribbean expanded modestly to X tons, picking up by 4.4% against 2020 figures. In general, imports posted a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, nucleic acid imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 29%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons) was the key importer of nucleic acids and their salts, constituting 61% of total imports. Mexico (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Argentina (7%) and Colombia (4.7%). Peru (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to nucleic acid imports into Brazil stood at +4.3%. At the same time, Colombia (+7.0%), Argentina (+4.9%), Mexico (+4.0%) and Peru (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +7.0% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil and Mexico increased by +7.7 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported nucleic acids and their salts in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 10% share.
In Brazil, nucleic acid imports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (-10.7% per year) and Argentina (+4.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 72%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Argentina ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
