The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Brazil prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. Guatemala (X tons) and Panama (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guatemala (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guatemala emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Panama (-27.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+87 p.p.) and Guatemala (+3.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Panama (-2.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest x-ray examination preparations supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Guatemala ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Brazil amounted to +7.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guatemala (+15.6% per year) and Panama (-23.0% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, waning by -15.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 373% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; rising by 15% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, x-ray examination preparations imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the main importer of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 34% of total imports in 2022. Colombia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (12%), Argentina (11%) and Uruguay (4.7%). Guatemala (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of opacifying preparations for x-ray examinations. At the same time, Nicaragua (+23.4%), the Dominican Republic (+21.1%), Chile (+12.6%), Ecuador (+12.4%), Colombia (+9.9%), Uruguay (+3.0%), Peru (+1.5%) and Argentina (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nicaragua emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +23.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Guatemala (-11.3%) and Mexico (-19.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+8.4 p.p.), Colombia (+8 p.p.), Nicaragua (+3.5 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+2.7 p.p.), Ecuador (+2.5 p.p.) and Brazil (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Guatemala (-9.8 p.p.) and Mexico (-13.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Chile ($X) and Colombia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 54% of total imports. Argentina, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Mexico and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Among the main importing countries, the Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +22.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
