Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +68.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Peru (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+2.3 p.p.) and the Dominican Republic (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Peru saw its share reduced by -2.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest drawing chalk supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 5.3% share of total exports. It was followed by the Dominican Republic, with a 1.8% share.

In Mexico, drawing chalk exports decreased by an average annual rate of -8.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-8.7% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+67.7% per year).

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -51.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Haiti (X units) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Brazil (7.5%), Argentina (7%), Chile (5.9%), Guatemala (5.2%) and Peru (4.9%). Colombia (X units), El Salvador (X units), Ecuador (X units), Costa Rica (X units) and the Dominican Republic (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Peru (+6.0%), Haiti (+5.4%) and El Salvador (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +6.0% from 2012-2021. Guatemala experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Chile (-1.2%), Costa Rica (-1.3%), Argentina (-1.4%), Colombia (-2.6%), the Dominican Republic (-4.8%), Ecuador (-5.8%) and Brazil (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Haiti (+6.9 p.p.) and Peru (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brazil and Mexico saw its share reduced by -5.3% and -5.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 9.9% share.

In Mexico, drawing chalk imports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-2.8% per year) and Chile (-3.7% per year).
