Pineapple Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American pineapple market decreased by -0.1% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Pineapple Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, pineapple production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Costa Rica (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Mexico (X tons), with a combined 65% share of total production. Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Colombia (with a CAGR of +6.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average pineapple yield in Latin America and the Caribbean declined to X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 4.6%. Over the period under review, the pineapple yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the pineapple harvested area in Latin America and the Caribbean shrank modestly to X ha, remaining constant against 2021 figures. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 4.7% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the pineapple harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Pineapple Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, shipments abroad of pineapples decreased by -0.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after three years of growth. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 7.3%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pineapple exports declined to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 14%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports by Country

Costa Rica dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ecuador (X tons), generating a 4.8% share of total exports. Honduras (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Costa Rica experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of pineapples. At the same time, Ecuador (+5.2%) and Honduras (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ecuador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012-2022. Ecuador (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Costa Rica saw its share reduced by -2.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Costa Rica ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ecuador ($X), with a 6.7% share of total exports.

In Costa Rica, pineapple exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ecuador (+4.2% per year) and Honduras (+4.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 9.4%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ecuador ($X per ton), while Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Costa Rica (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Pineapple Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, approx. X tons of pineapples were imported in Latin America and the Caribbean; which is down by -12.4% compared with 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by +0.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

El Salvador (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the key importers of pineapples in 2022, resulting at approx. 37% and 36% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), achieving a 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Uruguay (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons) - each accounted for a 5.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Uruguay (with a CAGR of +18.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Argentina ($X) and El Salvador ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 83% share of total imports. Uruguay and Paraguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.1%.

Uruguay, with a CAGR of +19.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 9.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
