The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Mexico was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 35% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Peru (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons). All these countries together took near 46% share of total exports. The following exporters - El Salvador (X tons) and Chile (X tons) - each amounted to an 8.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by El Salvador (with a CAGR of +17.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Peru, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico stood at +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+7.9% per year) and Peru (+2.5% per year).

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, overseas purchases of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Mexico was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 41% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (8.9%), Colombia (6.6%) and Argentina (6%). The following importers - Peru (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) - together made up 16% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip imports into Mexico stood at +4.4%. At the same time, Chile (+7.4%), the Dominican Republic (+5.9%), Peru (+5.7%), Argentina (+5.0%), Guatemala (+4.9%), Ecuador (+4.7%), El Salvador (+3.7%), Costa Rica (+3.4%) and Colombia (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +7.4% from 2012-2021. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Chile (+2.4 p.p.) and Mexico (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brazil saw its share reduced by -4.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
