Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, overseas shipments of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the fifth year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons), distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Chile (X tons) represented the major exporters of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, together comprising 80% of total exports. The following exporters - Argentina (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Colombia (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) - each recorded a 16% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest non-cellular polyethylene film supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and Guatemala ($X), with a combined 59% share of total exports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +12.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight decline. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
For the fifth year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in overseas purchases of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip, which increased by 15% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, non-cellular polyethylene film imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Mexico was the main importer of non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 41% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Chile (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together generating a 29% share of total imports. Costa Rica (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Haiti (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-cellular polyethylene film imports into Mexico stood at +3.1%. At the same time, Haiti (+19.1%), Ecuador (+7.8%), Chile (+7.7%), the Dominican Republic (+6.9%), El Salvador (+6.3%), Costa Rica (+4.8%), Argentina (+4.4%), Uruguay (+3.9%), Colombia (+1.7%) and Peru (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Haiti emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012-2021. Guatemala experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Brazil (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile and Haiti increased by +3.4 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-cellular polyethylene films, sheets, foil and strip in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 9.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico amounted to +4.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (-0.6% per year) and Chile (+5.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Haiti ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
