In 2021, supplies from abroad of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene) was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, polystyrene in primary forms imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Mexico (X tons) represented the major importer of polystyrene in primary forms (excluding expansible polystyrene), committing 45% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), Peru (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons).
