In value terms, polyvinyl chloride production shrank markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +40.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the production volume increased by 82%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Polyvinyl Chloride Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, approx. X tons of polyvinyl chloride were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; flattening at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, polyvinyl chloride exports declined notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Colombia dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. Brazil (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.7% share, followed by Mexico (5.3%). El Salvador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Colombia increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brazil (+12.2%) and El Salvador (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mexico (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+41 p.p.) and Brazil (+8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -38.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Colombia ($X) remains the largest polyvinyl chloride supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Colombia amounted to +2.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+10.6% per year) and Mexico (-17.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -16.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyvinyl chloride export price increased by +47.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 76% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Polyvinyl Chloride Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
Polyvinyl chloride imports shrank significantly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -16.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, polyvinyl chloride imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 88%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.
Imports by Country
Mexico (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) represented the main importers of polyvinyl chloride in 2022, finishing at approx. 27% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Peru (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.5% share, followed by Colombia (6.2%), Guatemala (5.5%), Chile (5.1%) and Ecuador (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Guatemala (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Peru ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 61% of total imports. Guatemala, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.
Among the main importing countries, Guatemala, with a CAGR of +9.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -5.5% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, polyvinyl chloride import price increased by +42.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Chile ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) and Peru ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Chile (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
