In 2021, approx. X units of porous-tipped pens and markers were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; growing by 7.9% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 60%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, porous-tipped pen exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Exports by Country

Mexico dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 85% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Peru (X units), comprising an 8.5% share of total exports. Colombia (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Mexico was also the fastest-growing in terms of the porous-tipped pens and markers exports, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012 to 2021. Colombia (-1.6%) and Peru (-3.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+25 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Colombia and Peru saw its share reduced by -3.1% and -10.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest porous-tipped pen supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.

In Mexico, porous-tipped pen exports increased at an average annual rate of +16.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (-4.1% per year) and Colombia (-2.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, porous-tipped pen export price increased by +75.5% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -23.8% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, porous-tipped pen imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -14.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Mexico (X units) represented the key importer of porous-tipped pens and markers, generating 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X units), Argentina (X units), Colombia (X units) and Chile (X units), together comprising a 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Peru (X units), Ecuador (X units), Guatemala (X units), Nicaragua (X units), Bolivia (X units), Honduras (X units) and Costa Rica (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to porous-tipped pen imports into Mexico stood at +7.7%. At the same time, Honduras (+12.2%), Nicaragua (+8.0%), Colombia (+2.8%), Peru (+2.3%), Guatemala (+1.3%) and Costa Rica (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth.
