In 2022, shipments abroad of printing and writing paper was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing and writing paper exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a slight descent. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Brazil dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2022. Colombia (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of printing and writing paper. At the same time, Mexico (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +1.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Colombia (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Brazil increased by +8 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) remains the largest printing and writing paper supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Colombia ($X), with a 3.2% share of total exports.

In Brazil, printing and writing paper exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (-8.6% per year) and Mexico (+2.3% per year).

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of printing and writing paper increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, printing and writing paper imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mexico was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 34% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Chile (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together achieving a 39% share of total imports. Guatemala (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Bolivia (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Uruguay (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uruguay (+1.9%) and the Dominican Republic (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +1.9% from 2012-2022. Guatemala and Bolivia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Paraguay (-1.2%), El Salvador (-1.5%), Colombia (-3.8%), Chile (-4.6%), Ecuador (-5.0%), Argentina (-5.9%), Peru (-6.2%) and Brazil (-12.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mexico (+7.7 p.p.), Guatemala (+1.8 p.p.) and the Dominican Republic (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Brazil (-10.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported printing and writing paper in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 9.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 9.1% share.

In Mexico, printing and writing paper imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (-4.8% per year) and Brazil (-9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 28% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
