Propene Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American propene market rose significantly to $X in 2021, picking up by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. In value terms, propene exports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 329% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Venezuela (X tons) represented the major exporter of propene (propylene) in Latin America and the Caribbean, creating 98% of total export.

Venezuela was also the fastest-growing in terms of the propene (propylene) exports, with a CAGR of -29.0% from 2012 to 2021. Venezuela (+70 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Venezuela ($X) also remains the largest propene supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 67% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Venezuela.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Venezuela amounted to -1.1% per year.

Propene Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, supplies from abroad of propene (propylene) decreased by -7.5% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, propene imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 36% against the previous year. Colombia was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 73% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), comprising a 27% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to propene imports into Colombia stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Mexico (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mexico emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mexico increased by +5 percentage points.

In value terms, Colombia ($X) and Mexico ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021.

Mexico, with a CAGR of +8.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 31% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Colombia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.6%).
