Pumpkin Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American pumpkin market was estimated at $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Pumpkin Production in Latin America and the Caribbean

In value terms, pumpkin production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a notable increase. The country with the largest volume of pumpkin production was Mexico (X tons), accounting for 32% of total volume. Moreover, pumpkin production in Mexico exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Cuba (X tons), twofold. Argentina (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Mexico amounted to +2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cuba (-1.7% per year) and Argentina (-0.7% per year).

In 2022, the average pumpkin yield in Latin America and the Caribbean totaled X tons per ha, standing approx. at 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the yield increased by 5.6% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were harvested in Latin America and the Caribbean; standing approx. at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 4.6%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the pumpkin harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas shipments of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -6% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -12.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 173%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. Costa Rica (X tons), Peru (X tons) and Honduras (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +14.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Peru (+15.8%), Honduras (+7.2%) and Costa Rica (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Peru emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2022. Mexico (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Costa Rica saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest pumpkin supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Honduras, with a 1.5% share.

In Mexico, pumpkin exports expanded at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (+7.0% per year) and Honduras (+9.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Peru (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Pumpkin Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Pumpkin imports stood at X tons in 2022, surging by 7.2% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 165% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, pumpkin imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 196%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons) was the largest importer of pumpkin (squash and gourds), mixing up 43% of total imports. Paraguay (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Mexico (11%), Brazil (9.1%) and Argentina (7.4%). Uruguay (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pumpkin imports into Chile stood at +13.7%. At the same time, Brazil (+41.0%), Uruguay (+34.4%), Argentina (+21.5%), Paraguay (+13.3%), El Salvador (+11.5%) and Mexico (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +41.0% from 2012-2022. Brazil (+7.9 p.p.), Argentina (+3.1 p.p.), El Salvador (+3 p.p.) and Uruguay (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Paraguay, Chile and Mexico saw its share reduced by -3.3%, -5.6% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico stood at +15.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Argentina (+37.8% per year) and Chile (+14.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 13% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin import price increased by +67.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 59%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
