In 2022, the Latin American recovered fibre pulp market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Recovered Fibre Pulp Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, recovered fibre pulp production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Recovered Fibre Pulp Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, the amount of recovered fibre pulp exported in Latin America and the Caribbean rose rapidly to X tons, with an increase of 6.7% against the year before. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 138%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, recovered fibre pulp exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Honduras (X tons) and Colombia (X tons) dominates exports structure, together committing 94% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Honduras (with a CAGR of +46.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Colombia ($X), Honduras ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 96% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Honduras, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Honduras ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Colombia (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Recovered Fibre Pulp Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
For the third year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in supplies from abroad of recovered fibre pulp, which decreased by -3.2% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -26.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, recovered fibre pulp imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Guatemala was the major importer of recovered fibre pulp in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2022. Brazil (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mexico (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons). All these countries together held near 33% share of total imports. Chile (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to recovered fibre pulp imports into Guatemala stood at +7.3%. At the same time, Costa Rica (+34.5%), Brazil (+15.5%) and Chile (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Costa Rica emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mexico (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Guatemala (+20 p.p.), Brazil (+11 p.p.) and Costa Rica (+5.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -27.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Guatemala ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported recovered fibre pulp in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 7.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Guatemala stood at +12.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (+14.2% per year) and Mexico (-8.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 31% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Mexico ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
