Roasted Coffee Substitutes Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American roasted coffee substitutes market contracted to $X in 2021, dropping by -9.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +11.8% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +11.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Roasted Coffee Substitutes Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas shipments of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes decreased by -15.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 24%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Chile prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2021. Argentina (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.2% share, followed by Colombia (4.6%). The following exporters - Bolivia (X tons) and Panama (X tons) - each reached a 4.1% share of total exports.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes exports, with a CAGR of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021. Colombia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Panama (-1.9%), Argentina (-4.0%) and Bolivia (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile increased by +24 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest roasted coffee substitutes supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Colombia ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile totaled +2.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Colombia (-0.2% per year) and Argentina (-2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Panama (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas purchases of roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes increased by 4.3% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, roasted coffee substitutes imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Peru prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Bolivia (X tons), Guyana (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Aruba (X tons), together committing a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Ecuador (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) - each reached a 3.8% share of total imports.

Imports into Peru increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Chile (+44.7%), Bolivia (+15.4%), Ecuador (+8.0%) and Aruba (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +44.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guyana (-5.1%) and Uruguay (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Chile (+5.8 p.p.), Bolivia (+5.4 p.p.) and Peru (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Uruguay (-2.2 p.p.) and Guyana (-7.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Peru ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported roasted chicory and other roasted coffee substitutes in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bolivia ($X), with a 9.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Guyana, with a 7% share.

In Peru, roasted coffee substitutes imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Bolivia (+11.9% per year) and Guyana (-5.0% per year).
