Rum Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Latin American rum market reached $X in 2022, picking up by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Rum Production in Latin America and the Caribbean
In value terms, rum production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Rum Exports
Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, approx. X litres of rum were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; falling by -4.1% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres, and then fell modestly in the following year.
In value terms, rum exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the three major exporters of rum, namely the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Guatemala, represented more than half of total export. Jamaica (X litres) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Venezuela (X litres), Panama (X litres) and Brazil (X litres). All these countries together held near 30% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guatemala (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X), Cuba ($X) and Venezuela ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 58% of total exports.
Venezuela, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per litre in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 8.9%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per litre), while Brazil ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rum Imports
Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2022, supplies from abroad of rum increased by 15% to X litres, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rum imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the twelve major importers of rum, namely El Salvador, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Honduras, Peru, Costa Rica, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, Panama and Barbados, represented more than two-thirds of total import.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Dominican Republic (with a CAGR of +41.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest rum importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Chile ($X), El Salvador ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X), with a combined 37% share of total imports.
The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +33.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per litre), while Paraguay ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Panama (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
