Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2018, approx. X tons of semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice were exported in Latin America and the Caribbean; flattening at the previous year. The total exports indicated resilient growth from 2007 to 2018: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2018 figures, milled rice exports increased by +X% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011 with an increase of X% y-o-y. In that year, milled rice exports reached their peak of X tons. From 2012 to 2018, the growth of milled rice exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, milled rice exports amounted to $X in 2018. Exports by Country

Uruguay represented the largest exporter of semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2018. Paraguay (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Brazil (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Mexico (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total exports. Ecuador (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mexico, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Uruguay ($X) remains the largest milled rice supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising X% of total milled rice exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Brazil ($X), with a X% share of total exports. It was followed by Paraguay, with a X% share.

In Uruguay, milled rice exports increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007-2018. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+X% per year) and Paraguay (+X% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The milled rice export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2018, leveling off at the previous year. Over the last eleven-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +X%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when the export price increased by X% against the previous year. In that year, the export prices for semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice reached their peak level of $X per ton. From 2009 to 2018, the growth in terms of the export prices for semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

The imports totaled X tons in 2018, shrinking by -X% against the previous year. Overall, milled rice imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2010 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, milled rice imports reached their maximum at X tons in 2017, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, milled rice imports totaled $X in 2018. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +X% over the period from 2007 to 2018; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2008 when imports increased by X% year-to-year. In that year, milled rice imports reached their peak of $X. From 2009 to 2018, the growth of milled rice imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2018, Haiti (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Peru (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Chile (X tons) were the main importers of semi-milled or wholly milled (bleached) rice imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, committing X% of total import. Cuba (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of imports, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Venezuela (+X% per year), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest milled rice importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Haiti ($X), Peru ($X) and Brazil ($X), with a combined X% share of total imports. Mexico, Venezuela, Chile and Cuba lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X terms of the main importing countries, Venezuela (+X% per year) experienced the highest growth rate of market size, over the period under review, while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
