Semiconductor Device Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the Latin American semiconductor device market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible reduction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor device production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After five years of decline, overseas shipments of semiconductor devices increased by 31% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 123%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor device exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Mexico (X units), together reaching 100% of total export.

Mexico was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor devices exports, with a CAGR of +9.2% from 2012 to 2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mexico increased by +8.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) also remains the largest semiconductor device supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, declining by -5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 8.5%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Mexico.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Mexico amounted to -0.2% per year.

Semiconductor Device Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the third year in a row, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded decline in purchases abroad of semiconductor devices, which decreased by -15.1% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 72%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, semiconductor device imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mexico prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Costa Rica (X units), mixing up a 6.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Colombia (X units) and El Salvador (X units) - each amounted to a 3.9% share of total imports.

Imports into Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -10.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, El Salvador (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, El Salvador emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +8.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Costa Rica (-2.1%) and Colombia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Costa Rica increased by +3.4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest semiconductor device importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Costa Rica ($X) and El Salvador ($X), together accounting for 96% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, El Salvador, with a CAGR of +22.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 77% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($X per unit), while Colombia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by El Salvador (+13.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
