Sesame Seed Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Brazil (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Paraguay (X tons), together comprising 64% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average yield of sesame seed in Latin America and the Caribbean declined to X kg per ha, waning by -5.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 19%. The level of yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, shipments abroad of sesame seed decreased by -32.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 109%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sesame seed exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Brazil represented the major exporter of sesame seed in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 40% of total exports in 2022. Guatemala (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Paraguay (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons). All these countries together took near 50% share of total exports. Venezuela (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Nicaragua (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +84.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Paraguay ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 77% of total exports.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +80.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Guatemala ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Venezuela (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Sesame Seed Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Sesame seed imports declined rapidly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -59.7% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 64%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, sesame seed imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 66%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) represented the main importer of sesame seed, generating 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Argentina (X tons), together creating a 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Paraguay (X tons), Chile (X tons), Colombia (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Honduras (X tons), El Salvador (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

Imports into Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Paraguay (+50.6%), Peru (+15.2%), the Dominican Republic (+13.4%), El Salvador (+6.3%) and Chile (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Paraguay emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +50.6% from 2012-2022. Argentina and Costa Rica experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Colombia (-4.0%), Honduras (-5.1%), Brazil (-7.1%) and Guatemala (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Peru, Paraguay, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and Chile increased by +9.7, +4.3, +2.6, +2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sesame seed in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Peru, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico amounted to -4.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (-5.0% per year) and Peru (+12.5% per year).
