Shelled Hazelnut Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the Latin American shelled hazelnut market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 377%. The level of production peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Shelled Hazelnut Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, overseas shipments of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -0.7% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 1,674%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 3,352% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Chile (X tons) was the largest exporter of shelled hazelnuts in Latin America and the Caribbean, constituting 99.9% of total export.

Chile was also the fastest-growing in terms of the shelled hazelnuts exports, with a CAGR of +75.8% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile amounted to +76.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 95%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to +0.5% per year.

Shelled Hazelnut Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, imports of shelled hazelnuts in Latin America and the Caribbean skyrocketed to X tons, jumping by 34% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +144.5% against 2016 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports fell slightly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +21.0% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Brazil dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 90% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Argentina (X tons), committing a 5.2% share of total imports.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the shelled hazelnuts imports, with a CAGR of +9.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Argentina (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Brazil increased by +19 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported shelled hazelnuts in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Argentina ($X), with a 4.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +10.2%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 47%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Argentina stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+0.8%).
