Shelled Walnut Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the Latin American shelled walnut market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of shelled walnuts decreased by -13% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 157% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2022, Mexico (X tons) and Chile (X tons) represented the major exporter of shelled walnuts in Latin America and the Caribbean, constituting 98% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +328.9%).

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest shelled walnut supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Chile ($X), with a 31% share of total exports.

In Mexico, shelled walnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +384.2% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Chile stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+12.9%).

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the fourth consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in purchases abroad of shelled walnuts, which increased by 5.2% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, shelled walnut imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Brazil (X tons) was the main importer of shelled walnuts, comprising 46% of total imports. Mexico (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ecuador (17%). Uruguay (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Ecuador (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Brazil ($X), Mexico ($X) and Ecuador ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 84% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Mexico, with a CAGR of +8.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Uruguay ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) and Ecuador ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
