Silk-Worm Cocoons Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American silk-worm cocoons market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 416% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Brazil (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of silk-worm cocoons production, comprising approx. 97% of total volume. It was followed by Honduras (X tons), with a 2.4% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Brazil was relatively modest.

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of silk-worm cocoons (reelable) decreased by -45.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 94,950% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 33,293%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

The biggest shipments were from Brazil (X tons), together accounting for 99% of total export.

Brazil was also the fastest-growing in terms of the silk-worm cocoons (reelable) exports, with a CAGR of +191.2% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Brazil (+96 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) also remains the largest silk-worm cocoons supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt curtailment. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Brazil.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of silk-worm cocoons (reelable), when their volume decreased by -6.5% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, silk-worm cocoons imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 120% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The Dominican Republic dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Bahamas (X tons), constituting an 8.6% share of total imports. Costa Rica (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the Dominican Republic increased at an average annual rate of +49.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Bahamas (+104.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bahamas emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +104.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Costa Rica (-3.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Dominican Republic (+74 p.p.) and Bahamas (+8.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Costa Rica saw its share reduced by -32.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the Dominican Republic ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported silk-worm cocoons (reelable) in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with a 22% share of total imports.

In the Dominican Republic, silk-worm cocoons imports increased at an average annual rate of +16.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Costa Rica (-13.3% per year) and Bahamas (+94.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a precipitous contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Costa Rica ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bahamas (-4.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
