As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.
In value terms, soap in different forms exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Mexico was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 62% of total exports. Brazil (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Guatemala (10%) and Ecuador (5.6%). The following exporters - the Dominican Republic (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) - each amounted to a 6% share of total exports.
Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -6.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, El Salvador (+65.8%) and Guatemala (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, El Salvador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +65.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ecuador (-4.2%), the Dominican Republic (-4.7%) and Brazil (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Guatemala (+4.9 p.p.) and El Salvador (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -7.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest soap in different forms supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Guatemala, with a 7.9% share.
In Mexico, soap in different forms exports plunged by an average annual rate of -6.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (-8.2% per year) and Guatemala (+2.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
In 2021, purchases abroad of soap in different forms increased by 19% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +80.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 60%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, soap in different forms imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Cuba dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 57% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), committing an 8.9% share of total imports. Panama (X tons), Chile (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Jamaica (X tons) and Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Cuba increased at an average annual rate of +10.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Panama (+35.2%), Trinidad and Tobago (+25.1%), Argentina (+16.1%), Peru (+13.4%) and Chile (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Panama emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +35.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Jamaica (-1.6%), Mexico (-6.4%) and Colombia (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cuba, Peru, Panama and Argentina increased by +22, +4.6, +3.9 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cuba ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported soap in different forms in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 7.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Panama, with a 6.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Cuba stood at +7.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Peru (+8.8% per year) and Panama (+33.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -8.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 6%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Cuba ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
