Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

For the third consecutive year, LatAmerica and the Caribbean recorded growth in shipments abroad of caustic soda in the solid form, which increased by 3.7% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of caustic soda in the solid form skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of caustic soda in solid form reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of caustic soda in the solid form, namely Peru, Argentina and Mexico, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), mixing up a 4.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +4.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Argentina ($X), Peru ($X) and Mexico ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 89% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Argentina, with a CAGR of +1.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Argentina ($X per ton) and Mexico ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) and Peru ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Argentina (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Caustic Soda in the Solid Form

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, supplies from abroad of caustic soda in the solid form decreased by -1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of caustic soda in the solid form amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports of caustic soda in solid form attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Brazil (X tons) and Peru (X tons) were the key importers of caustic soda in the solid form in Latin America and the Caribbean, together reaching near 39% of total imports. Colombia (X tons) took a 9.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (9%) and Bolivia (6.6%). Guatemala (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Venezuela (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), Suriname (X tons), Jamaica (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Suriname (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest caustic soda in the solid form importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Brazil ($X), Peru ($X) and Chile ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. Colombia, Bolivia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Suriname, Venezuela, Jamaica and El Salvador lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Suriname, with a CAGR of +13.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Suriname ($X per ton), while El Salvador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Suriname (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
