The Latin American sodium nitrate market dropped notably to $X in 2022, waning by -39.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed prominent growth. Sodium nitrate exports soared to X tons in 2022, picking up by 127% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a slight decline. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, Chile ($X) also remains the largest sodium nitrate supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -4.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Chile.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Chile amounted to -0.5% per year.

Sodium Nitrate Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sodium nitrate increased by 75% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sodium nitrate imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Brazil was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 58% of total imports. Peru (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Argentina (X tons) and Mexico (X tons). All these countries together held near 36% share of total imports. Ecuador (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sodium nitrate imports into Brazil stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Argentina (+3.4%), Ecuador (+3.1%) and Mexico (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +3.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Peru (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+17 p.p.), Argentina (+4 p.p.) and Mexico (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Peru (-11.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sodium nitrate in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 9% share.

In Brazil, sodium nitrate imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+5.2% per year) and Mexico (-0.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 18% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Ecuador ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
