Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the amount of table linen, knitted or crocheted exported in Latin America and the Caribbean skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 71% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, table linen exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mexico prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), committing a 9.2% share of total exports. The following exporters - Guatemala (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Panama (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total exports.

Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -1.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+20.1%), Guatemala (+5.6%) and Chile (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +20.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Panama (-23.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Dominican Republic (+8 p.p.), Mexico (+7.1 p.p.) and Guatemala (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Panama (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest table linen supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Guatemala ($X), with a 3.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 2.8% share.

In Mexico, table linen exports contracted by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Guatemala (+9.5% per year) and Chile (-17.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the Dominican Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guatemala (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas purchases of table linen, knitted or crocheted increased by 9.9% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, table linen imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons), distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Peru (X tons) and the Dominican Republic (X tons) represented the key importers of table linen, knitted or crocheted, together achieving 65% of total imports. Costa Rica (X tons), Panama (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Jamaica (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Bolivia (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to table linen imports into Chile stood at +5.8%. At the same time, the Dominican Republic (+13.4%), Jamaica (+12.7%), El Salvador (+2.3%) and Paraguay (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Dominican Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2022. Guatemala and Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Costa Rica (-1.1%), Peru (-1.3%), Mexico (-3.3%), Colombia (-6.9%), Bolivia (-7.3%) and Panama (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Chile, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Jamaica increased by +14, +4, +2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Chile ($X), Mexico ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports. Peru, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Jamaica, El Salvador, Paraguay and Bolivia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

The Dominican Republic, with a CAGR of +8.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -8.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Bolivia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
