Asphalted Paper Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American asphalted paper market amounted to $X in 2022, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asphalted paper production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Asphalted Paper Exports

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, exports of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard in Latin America and the Caribbean plummeted to X tons, dropping by -15.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 276% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 245%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Mexico dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. Costa Rica (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Chile (X tons) and Ecuador (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 21% share of total exports. Colombia (X tons) and El Salvador (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Mexico increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, El Salvador (+20.4%) and Colombia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, El Salvador emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Chile (-2.0%), Costa Rica (-3.7%) and Ecuador (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mexico and El Salvador increased by +57 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest asphalted paper supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Costa Rica ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by El Salvador, with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mexico totaled +16.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Costa Rica (-4.0% per year) and El Salvador (+45.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was El Salvador ($X per ton), while Chile ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by El Salvador (+20.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Asphalted Paper Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, overseas purchases of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Chile (X tons), distantly followed by Mexico (X tons), Guatemala (X tons) and Nicaragua (X tons) represented the largest importers of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, together making up 72% of total imports. The following importers - Brazil (X tons), Colombia (X tons), Honduras (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), Peru (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons) and Bolivia (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Chile (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest asphalted paper importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Chile ($X), Guatemala ($X) and Mexico ($X), with a combined 54% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Chile, with a CAGR of +16.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 21%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
