Telecommunications Instrument Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American telecommunications instrument market totaled $X in 2021, with an increase of 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild contraction. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, telecommunications instrument production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2021, the amount of telecommunications instruments exported in Latin America and the Caribbean expanded markedly to X units, growing by 5.1% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 121%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, telecommunications instrument exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Mexico represented the key exporter of telecommunications instruments in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 74% of total exports in 2021. Brazil (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Jamaica (X units). All these countries together took near 17% share of total exports. The following exporters - Guatemala (X units) and Uruguay (X units) - each amounted to a 4% share of total exports.

Exports from Mexico decreased at an average annual rate of -12.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Uruguay (+20.3%), Guatemala (+15.3%) and Jamaica (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uruguay emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Brazil (-2.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Brazil (+6.1 p.p.), Jamaica (+4.7 p.p.), Guatemala (+2 p.p.) and Uruguay (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -15.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mexico ($X) remains the largest telecommunications instrument supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 2.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Jamaica, with a 0.9% share.

In Mexico, telecommunications instrument exports declined by an average annual rate of -10.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Brazil (+0.6% per year) and Jamaica (+10.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per unit), while Guatemala ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jamaica (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Telecommunications Instrument Imports

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of telecommunications instruments increased by 18% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, telecommunications instrument imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Brazil represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 38% of total imports. Mexico (X units) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Colombia (11%) and Paraguay (7.9%). Argentina (X units), Costa Rica (X units), Ecuador (X units), Guatemala (X units), Chile (X units) and Peru (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to telecommunications instrument imports into Brazil stood at -8.2%. At the same time, Colombia (+12.8%), Paraguay (+5.6%) and Costa Rica (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Colombia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2021. Ecuador experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Chile (-7.4%), Argentina (-7.4%), Mexico (-9.5%), Peru (-10.6%) and Guatemala (-16.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Colombia (+8.8 p.p.), Paraguay (+5.3 p.p.), Costa Rica (+2.5 p.p.) and Ecuador (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guatemala, Mexico and Brazil saw its share reduced by -4.5%, -6.1% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest telecommunications instrument importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Mexico ($X), Brazil ($X) and Colombia ($X), together accounting for 70% of total imports. Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Paraguay and Guatemala lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ecuador, with a CAGR of +3.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per unit), while Paraguay ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
