After two years of growth, shipments abroad of toilet paper decreased by -14.8% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +47.1% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 36%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, toilet paper exports contracted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.4% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 31%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

El Salvador (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total exports in 2021. Guatemala (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Brazil (7.2%). The following exporters - Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) and Peru (X tons) - together made up 6.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +18.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest toilet paper supplying countries in Latin America and the Caribbean were El Salvador ($X), Mexico ($X) and Guatemala ($X), together accounting for 83% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Guatemala, with a CAGR of +17.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest levels of toilet paper imports in 2021 were Honduras (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons) and Guatemala (X tons), together recording 58% of total import. Panama (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.6% share, followed by El Salvador (6.2%). From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Panama (with a CAGR of +101.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest toilet paper importing markets in Latin America and the Caribbean were Costa Rica ($X), Honduras ($X) and Nicaragua ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Chile, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Guyana and Jamaica, which together accounted for a further 42%.

Among the main importing countries, Panama, with a CAGR of +104.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, rising by 6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
