In 2022, overseas shipments of tomato puree and paste decreased by -8.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Total exports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tomato puree exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +94.9% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Chile represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), making up a 10% share of total exports. Mexico (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Costa Rica (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato puree exports from Chile stood at +3.5%. At the same time, Argentina (+10.0%), Peru (+8.0%) and Mexico (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Argentina emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2022. Costa Rica experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Peru (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Chile saw its share reduced by -2.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest tomato puree supplier in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Peru ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 3.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Chile amounted to +7.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Peru (+6.9% per year) and Mexico (+6.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 38% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean
After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of tomato puree and paste decreased by -13.1% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, tomato puree imports expanded notably to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 25%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Mexico (X tons) was the largest importer of tomato puree and paste, mixing up 31% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Costa Rica (X tons), Brazil (X tons) and Colombia (X tons), together generating a 30% share of total imports. Honduras (X tons), Guatemala (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Venezuela (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Haiti (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Cuba (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato puree imports into Mexico stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Cuba (+19.5%), Costa Rica (+7.0%), Colombia (+5.7%), Uruguay (+4.9%), Paraguay (+4.8%), Guatemala (+4.1%), Ecuador (+3.5%) and Honduras (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cuba emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +19.5% from 2012-2022. Brazil and Haiti experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Venezuela (-8.2%) and Argentina (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mexico (+6.2 p.p.), Costa Rica (+4.3 p.p.), Colombia (+1.9 p.p.) and Cuba (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -7.2% and -7.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mexico ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomato puree and paste in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Costa Rica ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with an 8.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mexico amounted to +10.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Costa Rica (+5.1% per year) and Brazil (+4.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, growing by 31% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%.
